Product Management in an IT firm is typically a complex, multi-faceted and multifunctional process. Product Management Methodology at AmSoft describes the various steps carried out to actively manage products through various phases of the PLC (Product Life Cycle), right from product inception to its obsolescence. This essentially is a 7 Phase process, each phases comprises of several stages, which can further be broken d own to steps associated with key deliverables.

STEP 01
Opportunity Assessment

In this phase, the market and customer requirements and opportunities are assessed to figure out the feasibility of the various product ideas/solutions.
The activities carried out in this phase include Market and Customer Overview, Study of Value Proposition to the Customer, Analysis of the Market/Customer/Competitive Drivers, Product / Technology Drivers, Determining the Strategic Fit and Feasibility of the Solution

STEP 02
Concept

In this phase, new Product ideas are generated, explored and validated. This phase also jump starts formulation of the product plans and roadmaps for the solution. Activities carried out under this phase include Conceptualization of Solution, Market and Customer Analysis for the proposed Solution, Determining the Competitive Landscape, Drawing the Technology alternatives for the Solution, Study of possible Issues/Road blocks, Preparing a Business Case for the Solution, Determining the Support requirements , Defining the scope of Project Management, Researching possible Project Sponsors

STEP 03
Definition and Planning

In this phase, the product ideas are formally articulated and a roadmap for developing and deploying the product is enunciated. Activities carried out in this phase include - Defining the Market in terms of size, trends, players and key success factors, Defining the Competitive Landscape and the alternatives for competing strategy, Evaluating the Solution Drivers and Assessing the Customer requirements
STEP 04
Development

This phase comes into being, when a product idea is coming to life. The product development phase primarily focuses on managing changes in the project vis-à-vis changes in the Market/Customer Requirements. It also concentrates on the Development/Technological aspects of the products. The major activities in this phase include revisiting Solution and technology Alternatives and reationalising them in current perspective, Articulating an Integration plan, Analysing the Change impact on Integrated Business Plan, Preparing Documentation and training materials, Defining Support processes, Drawing Development and test effort estimates

STEP 05
Readiness

In this phase the Product concept is put to development and prepared for rollout/launch. Activities carried out in this phase include Managing corporate-wide Readiness and Product schedules, Creating Roll-out strategies and Managing General Availability execution
STEP 06
Launch and Support
During this phase, Features and Enhancements are added to the Product, reported bugs are Fixed, new Markets evaluated and entered ; the product is leveraged to make it vital for as long as possible. Important activities in this phase include Interacting with Customers, Supporting the sales team, Assessing and Managing Maintenance Requirements, and Developing plans and rollouts for the duration of profitable life of the product
STEP 07
Retire

During this phase, products are retired and Customers Migrated to newer Products. Activities under this phase include Validating strategic, financial and technical Product Requirements, Managing impact analysis, Planning & Executing the Retirement process, Positioning, Planning and Managing customer Notifications and Announcements
